Can

	Negative	Short Form
can +مصدر	cannot +مصدر	can’t +مصدر

يعتبر الفعل (Can) – معناه يستطيع - فعل مساعد (أي يمكن استخدامه في النفي وتكوين السؤال) وناقص (وتتميز الأفعال الناقصة أنه يأتي بعدها المصدر من الفعل)

She can speak two languages.

Can you drive a car?

الاستخدام:

يستخدم الفعل (can) للتعبير عن الاحتمالية

Can you meet me at 5 o’clock?

يستخدم الفعل (can) للحديث عن القدرة أو الاستطاعة

Alex can play tennis well.

I can’t hear you.

يستخدم الفعل (can) في السؤال المعبر عن الطلب

Can you make me a cup of tea, please?

Can you help me?

يستخدم الفعل (can) في إعطاء التصريح أو الأذن

You can use my phone.

Could

	Negative	Short Form
could + مصدر	could not + مصدر	couldn’t +مصدر

يعتبر الفعل (could) – معناه استطاع - من الأفعال المساعدة والناقصة

الاستخدام:

يستخدم الفعل (could) للتعبير عن القدرة في الماضي

He could swim when he was five. 

I couldn’t do my homework last night because I was too tired.

يستخدم الفعل (could) في السؤال المعبر عن الطلب – يفضل استخدام (could) عن (can) في هذا السياق لأنها تكون أكثر تهذيباً

Could you tell me where the bank is, please?

Could you pass me the sugar, please?

Be able to

Present	)am, is, are( + able to + مصدر	= can +مصدر
Future	will be able to +مصدر	= can +مصدر
Past	)was, were( + able to +مصدر	= could +مصدر

تستخدم (Be able to) بمعنى (يكون قادر على) للتعبير عن القدرة أو الاستطاعة وهي بذلك تتساوى في المعنى مع (can) و (could)

I am able to touch my toes. = I can touch my toes.

I will be able to go shopping tomorrow. = I can go shopping tomorrow.

I wasn’t able to finish my homework last night. = I couldn’t finish my homework last night.

لاحظ:

أننا نستخدم (was / were able to) وليس (could) عند الحديث عن القدرة أو الاستطاعة في موقف معين شرط أن تكون الجملة مثبتة بينما يجوز استخدام (wasn’t / weren’t able to) أو (couldn’t) إذا كانت الجملة منفية.

I was very tired but I could stay awake all night.                    X

I was very tired but I was able to stay awake all night.          ✓

I couldn't hear him because of the music.                      ✓

I wasn't able to hear him because of the music.            ✓

لاحظ:

أنه ليس لـ (can) أو (could) مصدر ولا يمكن أن يضاف إليها (-ing)، فنستخدم (Be able to) في هذه الحالة

I would love to be able to see the future.

نلاحظ في المثال السابق أن (to) لا يأتي بعدها إلا (مصدر) لذلك استخدمنا (be able to)

I live in Florida. I love being able to go to the beach every day.

الفعل (love) من الأفعال التي يتبعها (فعل مضاف إليه –ing) لذلك استخدمنا (being able to)

لاحظ:

أن ما يميز(Be able to)  عن (can) و(could)  هو أن (Be able to) تأتي مع جميع الأزمنة...لاحظ الأمثلة التالية:

I have been able to swim since I was 11.
If he studied harder, he would be able to succeed.
